You’re not African enough.
We just don’t see the soul of your work.
They took a knife and carved out my hope,
Tossing it into the deepest reaches of regret.
Maybe when you’re a little more talented you can try again.

I want them to know who I am.
To see my dreams in the reflection of my eyes,
To hear my words from the voices in their heads,

Dare I step off a tangent of disbelief?
If I fly, will anything stop my fall?
I am light and yet weighed down by the subconscious.
I will be in the reaches of your regret.
